Grant Mallory was born in Mallorytown, Ontartio, on May 16, 1879. In 1890 the family moved to Brandon, Manitoba, and shortly after, his father died and Grant became “head of the house.” – at the age of 14 years. Mr. Wannon, a neighbor, came West, liked it, and returned with stories of the Chinook winds that broke the winters, that being sufficient reason for Mr. Mallory and family to be coaxed into their journey out West, away from the bitterly cold Manitoba winters. Mr. Wannop filed on 13 homesteads for himself and friends, the Mallorys arriving in April, 1905, to take over the homestead for his mother, Mrs. Eliza Mallory, his brothers, Bill and Cornell, sister Jenny who was later to become Mrs. Charlie Brophy, and an uncle Bill Thompson. They loaded all the household effects and personal belongings and 20 head of cattle into railway cars, making the journey to Nanton in two days. They were caught in a blizzard before getting shelters up, buy hurriedly put up some boards to make a wind break for the cattle; later building a barn and a house.
Bill stayed until 1908 when he went to work for Armstrong’s clothing store in Nanton. They were completely bailed out in 1909 so Grant went south and homesteaded at Power, Montana, coming back to Alberta in 1916.
He tells a story about thye old E.T. Ranch which at that time had only long-horned cattle. The apparently decided to vary the breed so brought in a herd of Hereford bulls, and just turned them loose. These bulls came upon Mr. Mallory just north of his homestead and surrounded him. He ran at them waving his coat and yelling, and they turned and went away, but came back at him three times more before leaving. They were just curious, probably had never seena man on foot before.
Early homestead neighbors were the Drummonds, Lawrences, Zangs, Bowies, J.J. Kidders, and the Galbraiths. Buggy or wagon was the mode of travel in those days. Grain was hauled to Parkland and some to Nanton, and supplies were bought there. Mail was brought to Lawrence’s homestead where they had a post office. Coal was hauled from the Theriault mine, east of Champion.
Grant bought what is now the Callaghan farm in 1917, and was living there when he married Lorena Myrtle Patterson, daughter of Donald Patterson of Auburn, Ontario. She was a school teacher, having taught at Praire Dell, Alston, and Blusson, also near Sibbold where she had homesteaded. Mr. Mallory ran the store in Kirkcaldy from 1920 to 1923 when he sold it to A.J. Malsey, and returned to farming. In 1945 he again took over the store, and it is still operating under the name of “Mallory and Carnegie.”

Notes: Charles exchanged letters with his sister Annie over the years. In 1907 he tried to convince Annie’s son Dr Charles R Moxley to move to Buffalo Center IA. The town was offering to build him an office and a guarantee of $400 per month. Charles was listed as a cattle drover but apparently made money in mortgages. He owned three pieces of property at his death, including a 715 acre farm, 110 acre tract west of Alto, and a residential property in Alto. He built a arch at the cemetery in Alto in memory of his wife Cecelia and left substantial funds for the perpetual care of the graves. (Info. From Don Swayne via E-mail 6 Apr 2002)

Today, I received some very sad news about one of our family. A cousin of mine (Mallory/Andress) and of Don Swayne, informed me that Don had succumed to cancer at midnight, Friday September 16th, 2005. He has been a long time member and a very generous contributor to our site. I am sure that the rest of our family will join me and pray for his family at this difficult time. He was a well respected member of Brockville, Ontario and will be missed by many family members and friends
Hi Everyone:I attended Don Swayne's wake last evening. I spoke with his wife and daughters and expressed our condolences to them on behalf of everyone. I told her that I had informed his extended family about his passing and said that we were all praying for Donnie and all of his family. She asked me to thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Naturally she and the rest of his family are very devastated about his death. The funeral and burial are this afternoon at 2PM. I'm not sure if I will be able to go buy our cousinJo-Anne Mielke, daughter of Don's mother's sister will be attending. Will send any further info. when it becomes available. Please keep them all in your prayers. Thanks: Sandy

Also re: Clement, Wallace living with George W & Francis….Wallace and Annie Clement were friends of my grandparents but I never knew why. Although…here’s some gossip for you…my mother says that Wallace Clement was the illegitimate son of “Elnora”. I know my grandmother had an Aunt Elnora Stalker (married name) and she was a nurse..I have pictures of her…but haven’t fit her in yet….but if Wallace Clement was born around 1884…and assuming there was an unexpected pregnancy..we could guess around for a girl around 15 – 20…that would mean we’re looking for a Mallory…or maybe a Kring I guess…born around 1864 give or take a few years. Haven’t yet read enough of your information to put the pieces together.

Bridget Maud. There was another child, my great auntie grace. She was either born in 1903 or 1905. I think Francis died when Aunty Grace was born but I can find no record of either Grace’s birth or Francis’ death. Apparently there was a baby boy too, but he died as an infant. So he must have been born between 1900 and 1903

The village of Wickware in southern Michigan was named after r Albert. He was postmaster there for 14 years. The History of the Founding and the Naming of More than Five Thousand Past and Present Michigan Communities, by Walter Romig, L.H.D., Wayne State University Press 1986 Page 603: WICKWARE, Sanilac County: the first permanent settler in present Greenleaf Township was Stephen Greenman in 1858, followed by Alexander Nichol in 1859; Hugh Jordan built the first sawmill in 1879; it was named for Alfred Wickware who became the first postmaster on October 31, 1882, the office operating until June 30, 1906 [Chapman; PO Archives].Note that the Alfred Wickware listed is really Albert Wickware. She says, "The patient from the hospital [?] sent me a note , saying that ALBERT Wickware [#214 in the book] was the Postmaster and Justice of the Peace (and a native of Canada) he settled in Sanilac County (Cass City-Caro area) in 1882." So . . . was it ALFRED or ALBERT? Arthur Manley's book seems to bear out what Helen had said."My friend from the hospital sent this copy of an "ad in an atlas" (but with no date): ALBERT WICKWAREWagon Maker and General Blacksmith Postmaster and Justice of the Peace Collections Promptly Attended To Business Solicited Wickware, Sanilac Co., Mich." Helen goes on to talk about Jessie' tiny store (7 miles east of Cass City), which was directly across the street from where Albert's store was. "Jesse said he offered to open the store if the other settlers would help him bring in supplies from Port Huron about 60-70 miles away. They all went to Port Huron "on the trails" (no roads then) and hauled everything back and Albert opened his complex. When he would run out, all the townspeople went again! Jessie was a little girl, but she remembers him well. She said he and his wife always gave her candy! He was very kind. There was a church, a school and his store. It was all destroy ed in a later fire. When Albert's wife died, he gave the store to an Ivan Vader (who now lives in California somewhere). Jessie didn't know who inherited the land, as she was very young. Albert died a month after his wife died. She didn't know his children. She said there are no Wickwares left in the area, nor in Cass City, or Caro."Amber was very diplomatic about pointing out that Arthur Manley's book clearly states on page 224 that the town of Wickware, Michigan was named after ALBERT Wickware. It also mentions he was the first postmaster and was residing in Cass City at that time (Wickware was absorbed by Cass City). I even remembered reading the note in the book when I went back and re-read it. Fran says it is due to old age.

Henry Wickware was born in Millington, Leeds County, Ont., June 22, 1849, and when nine years of age moved with his parents to Abinger, Addington County, where he remained till 1868. He then came to Tuscola County and resided in Caro a year when he came to Cass City. Mr. Wickware is a carpenter and builder by occupation and has established a wagon making business in Cass City, employing several men. In the fires of 1881 he lost a saw-mill and 75,000 feet of lumber, beside having his farm swept clean of all improvements. September 7, 1878, he married Miss Vanie Alvers, of Cass City, formerly from near London, Ont, where she was born. They have one child, Oracle, born June 28, 1881.
HENRY S. WICKWARE, who was born in Leeds County, Canada, June 23, 1849, is a son of L. P. and Catherine (Mallory) Wickware, both born and reared in Canada, near the birthplace of our subject. His father was by occupation a farmer and the boy resided with his parents on the farm until he reached the age of sixteen, having but scant advantages for schooling previous to that time, and none after he reached that age. When eighteen years old he came to the United States, locating at Caro, Mich., and one year later in the fall of 1869 making his home at Cass City.
While living in Canada the young man had worked for two years as an apprentice to a carpenter and builder and after he came to this county he completed learning his trade working at it until 1885. In 1873 he went into the planing mill business and in 1875 idsposed of his mill. He became financially interested in the wagon factory of Cass City and since 1885 has been its sole proprietor.
The 15th of September, 1874, was the marriage day of Henry Wickware and Venie L. Alvers, of reese, Tuscola County, and by this union they have two children - Ora M. and Mark S. In political matters, he is a stanch Republican, and has been Township Clerk for the past four years and a member of the Village Council for two years. He ran for County Register of Deeds, and although he had two strong opponents, he came near attaining his election, notwithstanding. Besides carrying on his wagon and carriage factory he sells McCormick binders and mowers and other agricultural implements and machinery and also deals in vehicles manufactured by others.

Does the Portland Oregon death reg. for Orlando Mallory confirm he was born Canada abt 1852 as below ? I can't find Orlando and Ruth either in 1880 US or 1881 Can census. I see a Orlando and Ruth Mallory in the MINNESOTA 1900 census (who appear to match Orlando s/o Josephbarnes and Annie Guild) and wife Ruth Imlay. In 1900 census they have daughters Sarah [born 1878 Canada] and Maude May ?? born 1884 in Wisonsin. In 1910 Oregon there is a Ruth Mallory, widowed (I think is says WD), with daughter Sarah age 30, son in law John Shannon?, and grandaughter Ruth. The details all seem to match to be the wife or widow of Orlando s/o Josephbarnes---but then I notice an Orlando H Mallory on a list for the 1930 census for Multnomah Co Oregon I have access to the 1930 census, but through a genealogy.com subscription, and 1930 is not indexed--without knowing the page, or at least the precinct number, it would be very difficult to find him. Have you seen him in the 1930 census ? If you don't have access I can ask Marg--she might have the ancestry.com subscription with 1930 fully indexed.

My husbands Great Grandmother was Jenny Mallory who married ? Morgan. We only know of one child of this union and that was his grandmother Ann May Morgan.Any help is appreciated. Cindy and Pete Vance (clouddancing80@hotlmail.com <mailto:clouddancing80@hotlmail.com>)
It is nice to put one mystery to rest. My husbands family were all named after other family members on the Vance side except for him.
His mother Pauline was the daughter of Jennie. We are trying to find out if Peter Mallory was the father of Pauline though. When my husband was a child he only remembers Jennie’s second husband and doesn’t even remember his first name, only that he was a very good to him and that they were Westbury. The only other thing we know for sure is that Pauline had a sister Doris who didn’t speak to her. There are other children but which man they belong to.
We didn’t get any information on Peter Morgan or Jennie’s maiden name until Pauline died in March and Pete’s half sister Sherry found it in old papers with a bible that had very little information in it.
Any help is wonderful and we jumped onto the site you sent this morning. I will go back in a little later today after I get errands done.
Thanks again
Pete and Cindy
11/15/2004 email
I got confused. After I emailed you, my husband threw in Coursin (sp). I made him call his half sister to straighten him out (lol). Here is what she says: We asked her to write all she remembers and we will get it from her this weekend coming. It was Mr Coursin who Pete remembers as very nice. He had a wooden leg that the kids used to throw darts at. Seemed to be the only time the man got angry. Sherry says that stories from Annie were that Peter Morgan was always trying to kill her. Pete remembers Annie as a “crusty woman” . We have a picture of Jennie, Annie and Pauline. Cindy
Pauline had a relationship with James Donald VanDusen, dob, Apr. 4 (no year) which produced James, Debbie and Sherry. Thank you very much for sharing it all and inviting us to the website. I will send another email shortly which you will find attached some pictures that you may post. I will name them for you. I will send the obit for Pauline as well. Pauline had one sister, Doris, who Sherry says their mom told her was older. Apparently, Annie had told Sherry when she was younger that there was a third pregnancy but she made sure she didn’t carry it to term. Annie was not a nice woman and hated kids, her second husband, however, Harry Coursin was very good to the kids. When Pauline was forced to leave Everett and leave behind the five sons, Harry quite frequently snuck food and clothing to the children (2 youngest were taken by CAS and placed for adoption which I will fill you in on in a moment) without Annie knowing. It was Annie that insisted the courts take the two youngest for adoption. They were adopted and renamed Derrick and David Nickols. Their adoptive parents owned Nickols Pharmacy in Marmora. Pete found them two years ago. David and David like each other, Pete and Alvin (changing his name back to his birth name) are best of friends. Pete, Alvin, Sherry, Debbie and Jimmy and I were at Pauline’s side when she died this past March. She was, to say the least, very happy to have met all her children before she died. She had told the story of what happened to force her from the boys to Debbie who told me as her mother lay dying. Pauline was unaware that her mother had anything to do with the two youngest being adopted out. As I said, I will send pictures and dates that we have so far very shortly. Thank you again for all the information, do you plan on doing a book? Let us know if you do we would love to have a copy.
Cindy and Pete
