Charles Franklin Potter
Charles Franklin Potter was born 24 April 1857 in Springville, Utah to Isaac Smith and Amelia Brown Potter. Amelia was Isaac's 3rd wife, he being a polygamist. His brother Eugene and sisters Anna and Emiline were also born at Springville. They later moved to Coalville, Utah.
Charles was 10 years old when his father was killed at Coalville. The rest of the family was very bitter against the LDS Church, blaming them for the death of Isaac, and all of them, except Charles and his mother, left the Mormon Church and joined the Catholic Church.
Charles went to work at the early age of 10, in a brick factory, for 50 cents per day to support his mother and two younger sisters. Anne McQuinn, his sister, often said that when Charlie worked we ate, and when Charlie didn't work we went hungry.
His mother later married Benjamin Franklin Potter, a brother of her former husband, and moved to Marsh Valley, Idaho where they homesteaded. Their two sons, Franklin and Bennie were born there. They moved to Oxford, Franklin Co., Idaho, where their tow daughters Daisy and Laura were born.
It was at Marsh Valley where Charles met and married Finis Abigail Wakley, the daughter of John Nelson Wakley and Elena Valeria Hemenway Wakley. She was not quite 16 years of age at the time.
When they were sparking they talked and laughed and kept Finis's father awake.
After months of this he put an end to it by saying, "We'll have no more of that". So Sunday morning, 23 March 1879, they hooked up old Dobbin and drove to the home of Justice of the Peace, Peter J. Wardel, and were married. D.E. Byington and Jeff M. Davis were the witnesses. That summer they cut wild hay at what was later called Blazer, and stored it for their future use. Their first son, John Willard Potter, was born at Finis's mother's home near Downey (later called Woodland Ward) on 31 Jan 1880.
Elena, Finis's mother, was a midwife and delivered over 100 babies throughout Marsh Valley. She had a large family and much work to do on the farm, but was never too busy to go aid someone who needed her.In 1880, when John was about six months old, they took their few possessions and took up homesteading on Dempsey Creek (which empties into the Portneuf River west of Lava Hot Springs). Dempsey Creek was named for a trapper who had camped on the creek and trapped there the winter before. Here they built a one-room log cabin. There was not another house between Arimo and Soda Springs, a distance of more than 50 miles.
Bring the first settlers, they chose the center of the valley for their home.
Later they built a two-story log home here. The land was very fertile and their property was composed of 360 acres. Charles later donated 10 acres of land east of the ranch on a flat-topped hill to the town of Dempsey for a cemetery, which is not owned by Lava Hot Springs. On the west part of the ranch was a large flat topped hill where Charlie built a race track, since he owned many fine stallions, race horses, and pulling horses. Here celebrations, such as the 4th of July were held by the early settlers for many years.
Although it could not be recognized through the United States, since there wasn't an official time keeper present, Charley clocked one of his horses, Jose Wilson, at a new worlds record time. Jose was a very temperamental horse, and you were never certain whether he would fly off the track or settle down and run. He was a very treacherous horse and succeeded in bluffing most riders but had all the respect for his Master. Charley was very kind, but firm, with his horses and they would do their utmost for him, whether it was a race horse, pulling horse, work horse, or just a riding pony.
Later, many other settlers moved into the valley, Byingtons, Hoopers, Bolls and Averys. Nephi Hemenway (Finis's uncle) settled just east of them, Frank and Amelia Potter & other relatives of Charley settled just west of their ranch. Charley and Joe Byington got out logs and built a schoolhouse and paid the wages for the first school teacher (Finis Fife). For his share John Avery boarded the teacher. The building was also used for a church. It was located on a hill on Charley's property near Hyrum (Hybe) Byingtons farm. Later a larger school was built on a hill northwest of Arthur Fagnant's home, in a more central location, but it later burned. Then a brick school was built on the Frank & Beckie Potter ranch later owned by France Potter. It was also used as a community building, a Catholic Church, and an LDS Church House. Years later it was torn down and the bricks were used in the schoolhouse at Lave, which it still used as the Grade school at Lava.
In order to get a Post Office, Charley and his sons (John, Charlie and Luther) took turns carrying the mail from McCammon, which is a distance of 12 miles, three times a week on horseback. They received the cancellation on the stamps for their pay. This averaged about 25 cents per trip. This was a very hard trip in the winter, as Idaho can get very cold with lots of deep snow. The post office was in the Albert Boyce home, later in the Hans Peterson store. The next postmaster was Washington (Wash) McClellan, when he lived on the Lowell Maughan ranch. Later C.A. Bristol & son Grant took over the post office. Later postmasters were W.W. Elledge, Ida Peck, Art Peck, and Wallace Whitehead.
Everything north of the Portneuf River was Indian Reservation. In 1902 this land was thrown open to homesteading. When the railroad came, the town was moved about a mile to the site of the railroad, and is now known as Lava Hot Springs.
Charley was very friendly with the Indians and always gave them food for themselves, and hay for their stock. He was very generous with everyone, and no one was ever turned away from his home.
Bob Smith was one of the Indians that used to come visit Charley. One day he had wounded a bear and the bear had run into the brush. Bob rode up to the ranch and asked Charley to go with him to kill the bear. They found the bear in the rush and Charley shot and killed it. Bob was afraid it still wasn't dead so he said, "Shoot him again, Charley". To satisfy Bob, he shot him again. When they got over to the bear Bob said, "He's dead, he's dead, me killed him a long time ago", thinking that maybe Charley would want some of the meat. It was always quite a joke to Charley, because of all the things he might have wanted, bear meat wasn't one of them.
When the Indians were trailing through they would stop at Charley & Finis' and hunt rock chucks and squirrels. They would always go up to the house and ask for bis-i-cuts, and Finis always gave them bread and any other food they had.
Charley & Finis raised 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, John, Charlie, Luther, Amelia, Ama & Orra were all born at Grandmother Wakley's in Marsh Valley. Aaron, Delania & Ethel were born at Lava Hot Springs. Ellis was born at Soda Springs. They all grew up and had families before they lost their first child. Their youngest daughter Ethel died of gangrene from a ruptured appendix at the age of 29. When Ethel died they had to buy a lot in the cemetery, as they hadn't reserved a lot for themselves when they had given the land.
In raising their 10 children they worked extremely hard, but they always showed such love and devotion, and had the patience of Job. Never did Charley lay a hand on any of the children but he still had wonderful control over them.
He often said, "If you can't control yourself, you can't control a child or a horse". The children, through love and respect, were happy and anxious to do things for their parents. They did not believe in the adage "Spare the rod and spoil the child". They governed their family by love instead of force. There never was a more wonderful, loving and understanding woman than Finis was to her husband, her children and her neighbors. She was loved and respected all her life.
In about 1891 Charles Franklin Potter was selected to be the first LDS Bishop.
Charley died on July 9, 1937 in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho and is buried in the Lava Cemetery on land, which he donated to the town.
Article from the Idaho State Journal of March 19, 1898 Charles F. Potter of Dempsey is a modern Samson. At Cohn's on the 18th, he drew 350 lbs. of sand on the ground in sacks at the end of a 300-ft rope. He also drew 500 lbs. by using a ladder for his footing. He won $7 in cash and a span or horses.

Among the early Mormon settlers who located in that part of the country later included in the Dempsey Ward were Charles F. Potter (who came about 1881) and Noah Reese. They located at different points along the Portneuf River and its tributaries, between the years 1888 and 1891. These first settlers were organized into a branch of the Church called the Dempsey Branch as a part of the Garden Creek Ward Oct. 18, 1890, with Charles F. Potter as presiding Elder.
On Nov. 19, 1891, the Dempsey Branch was organized as the Dempsey Ward, with Charles F. Potter as Bishop. He was succeeded in 1897 by Washington McClellan, who in 1909 was succeeded by Augustus F. Blaser, who in 1914 was succeeded by Charles M. Byington, who presided in the Lava Ward Dec. 31, 1930. On that date the ward had 37 members, including 11 children. The name of the ward was changed from Dempsey to Lava in 1909.Lava Ward
Andrew Jenson, Encyclopedic History of the Church, p.418 [p.418] LAVA WARD, Portneuf Stake, Bannock Co., Idaho, consists of the Latter-day Saints living in a scattered condition up and down Portneuf Creek in Portneuf Canyon for a distance of seven miles. Some of the farms are irrigated, but most of them are dry farms. Considerable wild hay grows in patches on the river bottom. There is some good fertile land, most of Which is rolling. The center of the ward, or the place where the Lava school house is located on the left bank, or east side, of Portneuf Creek, is 17 miles east of McCammon, and 32 miles northeast of Downey, the headquarters of the Portneuf Stake. It is also four miles above, or north of the Lava Hot Springs, or 14 miles by main traveled road southwest of Bancroft, in Portneuf Valley. The Dempsey, or Lava, school house stands about half a mile east of where Dempsey Creek empties into the Portneuf River. Dempsey Ward (now Lava Ward) originally embraced all that part of the country which afterwards became Lava, Lava Hot Springs and Topaz wards. Lava Hot Springs in 1930 occupied the original center of Dempsey Ward, Lava the upper or northeast part and Topaz the lower or southwest part of the original Dempsey Ward.Dempsey was thus named in honor of Bob Dempsey, a trapper or mountaineer, who built a little rock dugout in the lava rock, near the point where Dempsey Creek empties into the Portneuf River, Among the early Mormon settlers who located in that part of the country later included in the Dempsey Ward were Charles F. Potter (who came about 1881) and Noah Reese. They located at different points along the Portneuf River and its tributaries, between the years 1888 and 1891.
