Downey, Idaho, just north of the Utah boarder was the birthplace of Emma Marie Clegg. She was the tenth child of William Clegg and Mary Van Noy and was born July 6, 1891.
According to the Cambridge Ward records, she was blessed Jan. 20. 1895 by Charles Hancock and was baptizes a member of the L.D.S. Church July 7, 1908 by George A Hansen and was confirmed a member the same day by George F Hyde.
Emma's mother passed away when she was a young child and she was raised by her stepmother, Caroline, and her father. She grew up on the farm with her eleven brothers and sisters in a world full of never ending work. She walked nearly seven miles to school with her brothers and sisters, but had little education because she was needed to work the majority of the time on the farm.
As A young woman, Emma lived with her brother, John, and his family. Her Neice, Jessie Isenhour, recalls whenever there was thunder and lightening, Emma would frantically rush throughout the house to cover all the mirrors. She felt they attracted electricity and was terrified they would be struck by lightening.
Adelbert Malcolm Caverly and Emma were married on Oct 20, 1908 in Pocatello, Idaho. Adelbert was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and had been working as a seaman on the Great Lakes i Michigan. Shortly after they were married, he returned to Michigan and found work as a lumber man in upper Michigan while Emma remained in Idaho.
Their first baby, Iva May , was born in 1909 in Pocatello. Soon after, Emma and the baby joined Adelbert in Michigan. They became members of the Evangelical Church, They made their home in several cities in Michigan including Portland, Barryton, Big Rapids, and Flint. Apparently they lived and farmed on Adelbert's family farm for a while in Barryton. Two more daughters were born in Michigan. Florence was born in 1911 while the family lived in Portland and while in living in Barryton, Marion was born in 1916.
Around 1918 the family moved to Flint where Adelbert worked in a screw machine factory.
Emma was approximately 5'7" tall, medium build and probably weighed 125-130 pounds. She had large bone structure and dark hair which she wore pulled back into a bun. Her husband, Adelbert, was 5'5" tall.
Emma had pyorrhea and suffer for five weeks from blood poisoning. She died at the young age of twenty six in Flint, Michigan ;leaving behind her husband and three young daughters. Ater her death on May 22, 1919, an English couple who lived next door to the family, adopted the youngest daughter,Mario. She was then known as Marion Emma Overton. The Overton's purchased Emma and Adelbert Home.
Emma Marie Clegg Caverly is buried at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
Life sketch compiled from information from her niece, Jessie Isenhour, and her granddaughter, Yvonne Ferris.

Adelbert's wife Emma Marie had died in 1919 in Flint Mi and his youngest daughter Marion, had been given to James and Emma Overton of Flint., for adoption. James and Emma were the next door neighbors of Delbert and Marie, and Delbert worked for James in his Tool & Die Shop.
James and Emma bought Delbert and Marie's house, and when Marion married Ewald Kremesec in 1936, they raised 3 children in the house that Marion had lived in as a small child.
Adelbert's Registration Card C 21-3-7 states that he lived a R.F.D. #1, Flint, Genesee Co., Mi.
He was 40 yrs old, and was born June 12th, 1878. He is a US citizen and works as an inspector for Aircraft Co., on Leith St. in Flint .His nearest relative is Mrs Emma M. Caverley of R. F. D. # 1 Flint Michigan. He is of medium height, blue eyes, and has brown hair.
Date fo Registration: Sept. 12, 1918
AS IT WAS TOLD TO ME:
On Nov. 8, 1899, Adelbert, age 21 married Katie Newman, age 18, daughter of Emery Newman and Margaret Berg. Altho this marriage was of short duration, about four years, they had a daughter Loral May Caverly, born Jan, 30, 1900. Loral eventually married Ira Rizor, and had two children, Lyle Adelbert, and Doris May. Loral lived to be 94 yrs old.
After Katie and Adelbert were divorced, Adelbert walked out to Idaho hoping to get work. That was where he met Emma Clegg. They were married on Oct 20, 1908, in Idaho. Emma stayed in Idaho with their first born, Iva May , while Adelbert came back to Mich to find work. When Emma was pregnant with their second child, Florence Lillian, she also came to Mich and they settled in Portland. At sometime Adelbert worked on the boats on the Great Lakes according to his seaman's papers. My mom, Marion Viola, was the last born, in 1916 in Barryton, Mecosta Co. In 1918 Adelbert's registration papers say he was 40, and working at the Aircraft Co. on Leight Street in Flint as an inspector. Next of kin was Emma Marie( Clegg ) Caverly. The aircraft plant made engines for the planes during the war.
Emma Marie died in 1919, and Adelbert, Iva, and Florence, went to Barryton to live with his parents, Stephen and Anna, in 1920. His sister Ester, and her two sons, was also living with them and Ester was also widowed. Marion was given up for adoption by the couple that had lived next door to them on Fenton Rd.
According to Florence's oldest daughter, Yvonne, Adelbert had the wander lust. He used to leave Aunt Iva, and Aunt Florence, with his sister Ester's daughter June, and go off for weeks at a time. No one knew where he went or when he would be back.
After Anna died in 1925, Stephen and Adelbert walked to Idaho. By May of 1930 Stephen came back to Michigan, sick, and was living with his granddaughter June and her husband, Glenn Graft, and their children. Stephen died on Oct 8, 1030, of chronic myocardis, ( inflammation of the heart muscle )
By the year 1935, Adelbert was also sick, back in Michigan, he had suffered from a stroke, and was living with his daughter Florence , her husband Donald DeLamarter, and their five children, with the oldest being only seven yrs of age. At that time Aunt Florence was having her 6th child, it was during the depression, they didn't have any money, many people were living in tents, and they couldn't take care of Adelbert. After Shirley was born Sept, 1936, they put Adelbert in the Clinton County Poor house, and he died Oct 14, 1936 of another stroke. I have tried to locate the grave, but as it was the poor house, it probably wasn't maked with a stone.
My cousin also told me, all the grandchildren really loved grandpa Stephen, but did not like grandpa Clegg. After Emma left Idaho, she never saw her father again. He did not like Adelbert, and as the story goes, he used to sit in a tree and shoot at him. When Anna's father died he left $1.00 in his will for her and her children. Guess you might say he disowned her.
