AS IT WAS TOLD TO ME:
Ewald ( Mike) met Marion late 1934. Marion's adopted father, James Overton, was in partnership with two other men, in the Overton Screw Machine factory . This was about the time the Union's were formed, and unknown to Jim, his two partners were selling jobs, for $ 200.00 in the plant. There were about 200 jobs at stake. Jim's two partners took off, and Jim ended up taking the blame, and was sent to jail.
On Dec 31, 1934, Jim's brother , Albert, came to Flint from Chicago, along with Ewald, Harold Borneman, and Whit Sanford. These three men came from around Al Capone's speak-easy.. The plant was shut down, and when it was able to re-open, it was called Flint Screw Machine Products.
Grandma Overton , was very strick with my mom. Altho mom was 19 yrs old, and working as a secretary at the factory, she was expected to be home at a certain time, and when she was not, grandma Overton wanted to know the reason and where she had been. Grandma Overton didn't like my dad very much, and when mom started dating him, she was upset. She thought dad was to old for her, 11 yrs older, different backgrounds and religion. Dad was Catholic, came from Chicago speak-easy's, and had been on his own since he was 14. I was told when they finally did marry, grandma Overton went with them on their honeymoon. Could be, as it took me 3 yrs and 4 mos to get born.
I do recall mom telling me about when her and dad went to Niagara Falls the end of June 1936, and were to stop in Lapeer, at Lake Nepessing, to stay with Kate and Tony Schutz, in their cottage over the 4th of July. As it was July, and the cabin was tiny, Tony decided to take the furnace out to make more room . When mom and dad got there, they had to walk in as the snow was to deep to drive in, and Kate was under the covers with Mary Ann, their 1 yr old daughter, trying to keep warm. Typical weather for July. I can remember many a 4th of July we wore winter coats in Ludington.
