Richard Allen Cummings was adopted by William Ira Clifton on November 6, 1951 in Flint ,Genesee Co., Michigan. Case # 50837. William E Doran, Judge of Probate.
Dick was co-owner of the Downtown Colonial Delicatessen in Ludington Mi, and working for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. On September 4, 1974 he was in Muskegon Mi, working as a conductor and was in the engine of the train, when 2 men out target shooting, emptied their 22 rifles by trying to shoot out the head lights of the moving engine. Five bullets struck along side of the engine, one striking Dick in his back as he sat by the open engine window. The engineer said that Dick had been looking out of the window and must have seen them as he looked up and said he'd been shot and fell to the floor of the engine. The train was only 5 mile from the end of the run and the engineer radioed ahead for an ambulance to meet them. Dick was pronounced dead at the arrival at Hackley Hospital, about. 30 Minuets after the shooting. It was later found out that the 2 men were only 100 yards away from the train when they shot at it. The 2 men were apprehended within a few days/ They were arrested on 1st degree, tried on 2nd degree and convicted of manslaughter. only one went to prison for 7-14 years, as the other one was let go for giving states evidence. The 2 men were cousins.
