220. Thomas JOHN
REFN: 1NWR-9W 1851 Mathry, Pembrokeshire, Wales
BIOGRAPHY: History Of Thomas John
by
Henry JohnThomas John was born at Wood Roach Parish, Pembrokeshire, South Wales,
January 29th 1820. He was the son of William John and Letitia Phillips. He
died January 22nd 1890. Buried at Portage Utah.
He was a shoemaker by trade. He sometimes worked at home and at other times
he worked as journey-man. Farmers would buy leather and hire him to come to
their homes and make shoes for the family and also their servants. He was a
very hard working man, never missed a day working from morning until late at
night, yet the country wasso poor, wages so low that he had a hard time to
provide food and clothing forhis family.
He was a religiously inclined, affiliating himself with the Independent
Sect, and for many years he was Superintendent of a large Sunday School
numbering from four to five hundred members. He was very well informed in the
scriptures in the Welsh language. Very few could beat him in quoting
scriptural passages.
He came to America about the year 1848, after having heard of the prosperous
times here. He secured his pass by working as assistant cook while on the ship.
He met with very little success in America. Times were dull and sickness in
the form of a felon on one hand overtook him. He returned home in the Spring
of 1849. When he landed in Liverpool he met a party of men and women who were
going to America. They asked him about the country. He told themtimes were
dull. Well, they said, It makes little difference to us. We are going to Zion.
Grandfather thought those people were surely mistaken as he had seen nothing
but sin and wickedness, just the opposite of Zion. They told him how the
Heavens had been opened and angels had again conversed with man and thatthe
passage of scripture had been fulfilled where John the Revelator declared,
"And I saw another Angel flying in the midst of Heaven, having the everlasting
Gospel to preach unto them that dwell upon the earth, and to every Nation, and
Kindred and tongue and people." REVELATIONS 14:6. They also told grandfather
that the Angel had shown himself to a young man by the name of Joseph Smith
and had shown him where records were concealed. These records gave the history
of an intelligent people that once dwelt upon this American Continent.
All this was news to grandfather and he thought surely these people had been
deluded. He tried to pass it off from his mind, but those words returned to
him again and again. The Heavens have been opened and Angels have again
conversed with man. In a short time after his return home his Aunt Mary
Phillips (his mothers sister) informed him that she had joined the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and gave him many reasons for so doing.
Grandfather had madethe Bible his daily study and was well informed but now
a new light had beenplaced upon many passages of scripture. It caused him to
think and ponder. Heprayed for light to know what to do for he was converted
to the Divinity and truthfulness of the Latter-Day Saints Church. He had to
decide which to follow, the ways of men or the commandments of God, which
should he choose. He finally decided that he would forsake all if necessary
and take up his cross and follow the Savior. In the month of May he was
baptized by Elder Phillip Sykes, ofSpanish Fork, Utah. By joining the Church
he had to go other places for workand met with many trying experiences but he
went on and by so doing he received a strong testimony of the truthfulness of
the Gospel.
His two older boys were attending school and were well liked by the teacher
and students until their father joined the Mormon Church. The persecution
became so great that they had to be kept home for they were beaten by larger
boys and severely whipped bythe school master. Fake accusations were made
against them which were alwaysfollowed with severe punishment.

Our ancestors, THOMAS JOHN AND MARGARET THOMAS, left their homeland to come to America in search of a new life, to share a new religion, and raise their children in a country of new promises. It was hard to leave family behind. It was a struggle to survive; but survive they did and we, the living descendants, are proof that it was worth it.
Every year we gather to honor their legacy. We try to learn more about each other and to share what we have learned from family stories and photos so that Thomas and Margaret, and their children, will not be forgotten. We need more individual histories.
Last year the long awaited family disk with Thomas John and the next three generations with photos was offered for sale at $5.00 per disk. Kay Shewfelt, our historian; is still taking orders for them. She will have some at the reunion this year. She will even show you how to use the disk and the photos together.
Now that you have had a chance to look at what the family has verified for births, marriages, and deaths, as well as LDS church ordinances, you may have additional information to share with the family genealogist and historian. We welcome any additional information or corrections. The disks are like a book on the shelf. It is not the end, it is just the beginning .
We want to start now to collect the data for the fourth generation of descendants. There are thousands of names and families to check. Could there be missing names to add? Can you please help?
Make enough copies of the enclosed family group sheet to complete one for your immediate family, one for you as a child in your parent’s family, and one for each of your grandparent’s lines. BRING them with you to the reunion, or SEND them to your family representative, or to our historian, Kay Shewfelt, or to Janet Newman, our family genealogist.
If you need help, call any officer and they will be glad to help you. If you have already completed family group sheets, just make copies and send them in. If you have your family on a computer on a genealogy program, make a copy on a CD and send that in. We will protect the names of the living, but this will give us a base for the future.
