Other information:
Isaac, like his brother Abraham, was almost certainly born in the three year period between 1640-1643 in Thorncombe where the registers for that time are missing. It appears he moved before 1675 to Stoke Abbott where he is first documented in that register as Isaac Rockett. The fact that he appears then as the father of sons called Thomas and Abraham and that the first Wakelys found in Stoke Abbott in the early eighteenth century were also called Thomas and Abraham is a good reason far accepting him as the next direct ancestor. however, there is a much more firmer piece of evidence from the Chardstock register of 1700. This reports that on September 27th 1700, Isaac Wakeley from Stoke Abbott was buried there.
There is also an additional entry covering his death. This shows that he was at the time probably visiting relations in the two old Wakely parishes of Hawkchurch and Chardstock. It also shows he was murdered!!
The full entry reads: 'lsaac Wakeley of Stoke Abbot. received his mortall wound at Hawkchurch by a man of that parish, and died at Tytherley. This was brought in willfull murder by a jury summoned by the Coroner. He was buried here at Chardstoke Septem.27'.
Isaac's move to Stoke Abbott probably arises from the fact that his cousin Dorothy, daughter of his great uncle Nicholas of Thorncombe (the sequestrator for Bridport Division), married into the Hill family of Stoke Abbott in 1650. We find Dorothy's son,John Hill, baptising children at the same time as Isaac; and we know, from Nicholas Wakely's will of 1661, that he kept up with the Hills even after Dorothy's premature death.
Isaac's fatal last journey almost certainly also had a family rationale. He had three cousins at Hawkchurch - John of Chackridge (Ann Studley was probably his wife); Richard of Broom (on the parish boundary between Chackridge and Chardstock; and William. It seems likely that he had been visiting one of these and was struck down by his murderer as he moved on to see relations in Chardstock.
These would have included cousins on the Tytherley lands and also his sister Martha; she married John Turner of Churchill in Chardstock, 1679. It is unlikely that one of his relations was responsible for his murder, but it seems that he must have known the man. The fact that the record in the Chardstock register states he was attacked by a man of Hawkchurch almost certainly means that Isaac was conscious enough before he died to name his killer.
Back in Stoke Abbott, Isaac's wife Mary would probably have been able to draw on more family support. Isaac's cousin George (another 'proven' Rockett alias Wakely) had married in 1667 into the leading local family of Gollop in Stoke Abbott and seems to have survived into the following century. By 1700, of course, Isaac's and Mary's two sons Thomas and Abraham were grown up and capable of supporting her and their sisters.
If Isaac ever had a son named after himself, it is likely that he died young. No record remains of any baptism; no Isaac (Rockett or Wakely) emerges in later records who might be assumed to be the son of Isaac of Stoke Abbott.
However, Isaac's name is fully honoured in succeeding generations; his eldest son Thomas had a son and two grandsons of that name; his younger son Abraham named his second son Isaac - thereby starting another line of Isaacs who became successful blacksmiths in Beaminster over three generations.
**********
The Record of Issac Wakely's burial
Although Chardstock was quite a, populous parish in 1700 only ten burials were recorded that year. Six were children (five girls and one boy) and three were wives. Isaac was the only man. The following year. 1701, the pattern changed and most of the burials were of grown men. In either year, or any year, or for that matter in any parish register the entry of Isaac's murder and burial in the Chardstock register stands out.
