Family Name: Wakley Origin: British Isles

Mantel: Gules and Argent

Authorty: Sir Bernard Burke, GeneralArmory. P. 1062, A Registry of Armorial Bearings from the Earliest to the Present time - 1884 edition.

Translation Of The Heraldic Description:

The background of the Shield is red on which there is a silver chevron separating three silver crosses with a cross at the end of each arm. There is a silver band across the top of the shield on which there is a red stag's head facing front. The mantle is red and silver. This is an ornamental design devised by the artist to represent a textile covering on the helmet, worn first as a protection against the heat and against the rust which would follow the damp: Later it as discovered that this textile covering as deadening to a sword blow and the sword would become entangled in it. Now the mantlings are shown out and 'torn to ribbons' See Complete Guide to HERADRY By A. C. Fox-Davies, page-383-384

NOTES:The chevron is believed by some writers to have been adopted from the bow of war saddle, which rose high in front. The cross usually means an ancestor as a Crusader. The stag shows a connection with forestry. During the Middle Ages the Knight was most important in battle because he as the rallying point for a group of men who wore his livery. Since he was completely encased in armor, it was necessary that they had some means of recognizing his quickly. For this reason distinguishing clothing become more important, and colors for clothing were chosen carefully to express people's claims to virtues. Red stood for strength or passion, and silver for purity. The time came when a knight repeated his colors on his shield. This as the beginning of coats-of-arms. Today these are the testimonials of meritorious deeds of our ancestors
