OAKLAND ARMY BASE, CALIFORNIA: Oakland Army Base was commissioned 8 December 1941 – the day after Pear Harbor. During World II and Korea, it provided greatly expanded facilities for moving troops and cargo through the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Today it is the home of Headquarters Military Traffic Management Command, Western Area, manages movement of DOD cargo and passenger traffic throughout the western United States and Pacific, handles cargo for shipment through ocean terminals; and contains the Military Ocean Terminal, Bay Area. The area is one of the great cultural and educational centers of the West. 95 mil. 600 civ. 560 acres at Oakland.

FORT ORD CALIFORNIA: Established 1971 named for Maj. Gen. Edward
O.C.. Ord, Civil War Corps and army commander, who commanded the Monterey garrison after the Mexican War; home of the 7th Infantry Division. 22,000 mil. 4,600 civ. 18,000 acres, 3 miles not of Monterey. The Fort Ord complex includes the Presidio of Monterey across the Bay and the huge Fort Hunter-Liggett some 65 air miles southeast. Fort Hunter-Liggett complex encompasses some 195,000 acres and a population of 45,000. Camp Roberts and Camp San Luis Obispo are California National Guard camps about 70 air miles southeast for Fort Ord.

FORT POLK LOUISIANA: Fort Polk is located in rural west-central Louisiana, 8 miles south of Leesville, approximately 45 miles from Alexandria and 62 miles north of Lake Charles. The 198,00 acre reservation serves as an ideal home of the Joint Readiness Training Center
(JRTC), 2nd Armored Cavalry regiment, 519th Military Police Battalion and several contingency units. The JRTC is the Army's premier training facility for U.S. light infantry units
and special operations forces. The total work population is about 10,911 active duty;
25,456 guard, reserve and ROTC; 18,137 family members; 6,235 civ. Founded in 1941, as Camp Polk to support the Louisiana Maneuvers; named for Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk, SCA, killed in action at Kennesaw Mountain GA, June 1864; it was officially designated Fort Polk in 1955 and became the home of the 5th Infantry Division (Mech.) Red Devils in 1974: The 5th division moved and Fort Polk became the home

PRESIDIO OF SAN FRANCISCO CA: The Presidio of San Francisco is located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It is the oldest military reservation in the nation, founded in 1776 by the Spanish. Established by the US Army in 1846. From the Presidio, Army Reserve units in the 15 western states are administered through 6th Army Headquarters. The Presidio is also the site of Letterman Army Medical Center, and Letterman Army Institute of Research. Considered part of the Presidio complex are nearby Fort Scott, Fort Baker, Fort Barry, and Fort Cronkihite. About 2,700 mil. 3.200 civ. Personnel are assigned on 1,400 acres at the Presidio.

REDSTONE ARSENAL ALABAMA: Redstone Arsenal was created in 1941 during World War II to produce artillery shells, named after the red soil of the region. Today it serves as the HQ, Army Aviation and Missile
Command and Space and Missile Defense Command, Strategic Defense command
(located next to city of Huntsville), Army Ordnance munitions and
Electronics Maintenance School, Redstone Scientific Information Center,
AMCOM Integrated Materiel Management Center, Army Missile and Munitions Center and School Army Space and Missile Defense Command, Program Executive Office, Air and Missile Defense. Within the Arsenal's perimeter is the Marshall Space Flight Center, operated by NASA. Situated on 36,750 acres, the post has a working population of approximately
2,528 mil. 14,497 civ. 12,541 contractors, 2,800 family members. Redstone Arsenal is in north central Alabama, adjacent to the southwest limits of Huntsville, a space age city of 160,000.

FORT RICHARDSON ALASKA: Established 1940, named after Brig. Gen. Wilds P. Richardson, pioneer Alaskan explorer. The present Fort was built following World War II. Home of 6th Inf. Div and 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) is located
eight miles north of Anchorage near Upper Cook Inlet, on this extensive post adjacent to city of Anchorage. Situated at the head of Cook Inlet in south central Alaska, the area enjoys a relatively temperate climate. Temperatures average 58 degrees in the summer and 15 degrees in the winter – warmer than Minneapolis in winter and like Eureka, California in summer.

FORT RILEY KANSAS:Steeped in the history of the Old West. Fort Riley was founded in 1863, named for Bvt. Maj. Gen. Bennet Riley, Mexican War hero, who died that year. It is located in rural central eastern Kansas, on 100,000 acres near Ogden, Junction City, and Manhattan, Kansas, and 100 miles west of Kansas City and 50 miles west of Topeka. Over the year, it has been the home of some of the Army's most famous fighting units. A former cavalry center with a proud tradition, its population 35,983 mil;
11,616 active duty, 25,714 guard and reserve; 12,151 family members; 4,813 civ. is now engaged in mechanized infantry training with the
1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), 3d Brigade, 1st Armor
Division and 937th Engineer Group (Combat). 24th Infantry Division
(Mechanized). It is also the home for the Third ROTC Region. The year around divisional unit's train for the annual NATO exercise in Europe called REFORGER.

FORT RITCHIE MARYLAND: Situated in the Catoctin Mountains just south of the Pennsylvania border, at Cascade, near Hagerstown, 30 miles north of Frederick Maryland. Fort Ritchie is the Headquarters of the 7th Signal Command. Begun in 1926, named for Gov. Albert C. Ritchie of Maryland; it currently has 2,330 mil.1, 200 civ. It is on 638 acres. It is the nearest military facility to Camp David, the Presidential Retreat, and just a few miles to the east. Fort Ritchie to close by September 30, 1998. 1111th Signal Battalion and 1108th Signal Brigade are to move to Fort Detrick, MD. Information Systems Engineering Command to move to Fort Detrick and Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Nation Guard enclave to remain.

The nation's largest government owned and operated arsenal, Rock Island is

Fort Rucker is the home of the Army Aviation Center and School, Army Safety Center, Aviation Development Test Activity, Army
Safely Center and the Aeromedical Center First Aviation Brigade; Aviation Training Brigade; Army Air Traffic Control Activity; Army Aviation Center NCO Academy; and Army School of Aviation Medicine. Construction began in 1942, shortly after America's entry into World War II, named for Col. Edmund W. Rucker, CSA, and Confederate cavalry leader. Today the post covers over 64,245 acres, with
