SACRAMENTO ARMY DEPOT CA:

Established 1942; repairs, rebuilds and fabricates communications-electronics supplies; home of Communication Systems Test Activity, Television-Audio Support Activity; 320 mil, 3,285 civ, 485 acres in southeast Sacramento.

CAMP SANTIAGO PUERTO RICO:

Accommodates brigade-sized or larger units for maneuver and specialized training at Salinas, Puerto Rico. Camp Santiago, Army National Guard. Camp Santiago is the largest National Guard training site in the Caribbean and supports training for all Defense Department military services. there are no permanent residents at Cam Santiago, though the facility can temporarily house thousands of troops.

ST. LOUIS AREA SUPPORT CENTER IL:

Established 1971 on inactivation of Granite City Army Depot; performs administrative and logistical services for Army Aviation Systems Command and Troop Support Command, both in St. Louis; 40 mil, 40 civ, 895 acres at Granite City, IL, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis Missouri.

Established 1942, named for Maj. Gen. Henry G. Sharpe, quartermaster general, 1916-1918; supports western United States, Alaska and the Pacific through the testing, repair, storage and shipment of military materiel; 26 mil, 1,216 civ, 724 acres at Lathrop, 60 miles south of Sacramento.

CAMP SHELBY ARMY NATIONAL GUARD TRAINING SITE MS:

Accommodates brigade-sized or larger units for maneuver and specialized training 12 miles south of Hattiesburg, Ms., on US Highway 49 south. Army National Guard Training Site, 17th Armored Brigade, 2/87th Training Division, Youth Challenge Program, 108th Training Regiment. 1,442 active duty, 525 family members; 800 guard, 20 reserve; 10 civilians.      Camp Shelby, Army National Guard. Encompassing more than 134,820 acres, Camp Shelby is the largest state-owned and operated field training site in the United States. FORT SHERIDAN ILLINOIS:

Known as "The Army's Biggest Little Post," Fort Sheridan was founded in 1887, named for Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, Civil War Union cavalry leader and commanding general of the Army, 1883-1888; It is located on 695 acres on the shore of Lake Michigan, 29 miles north of Chicago loop. The post serves as an Administrative and Logistics Center for Midwest defense installations. It is also home of the Army Recruiting Command, HQ Fourth US Army, US Military Enlistment Processing Command, 425th Trans Bde (USAR), Army Readiness Gp., 4th Recruit Bde and Recruit Bn, Chicago. In all, the Post serves 20 tenant/resident units. Population of 1,350 mil, 1,800 civ.

SIERRA ARMY DEPOT CA:

Established 1942, stores munitions, missiles, war reserves, 1 mil, 592 civ, 36,000 acres at Herlong, CA 60 miles north northwest of Reno, Nevada. Sierra Army Depot, CA to realign by September 30. 2001 www.sierra.army.mil 

FORT SILL, OKLAHOMA:

Founded in 1869 as a cavalry post, named for Brig. Gen. Joshua W. Sill, Union commander killed at the battle of Stone River, Tenn., December 1862. Located 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City in the heart of Oklahoma's Great Plains, Fort Still today is the Army's Field Artillery Center, Training Command and School, and HQ III Corps Artillery. The Field Artillery School is considered the University of field artillery and is responsible for developing artillery tactics and doctrine as well as training tomorrow field artillery leaders. III Corps Artillery is the largest and most diverse field artillery organization in the Army. Its battalions are equipped with artillery weapons ranging from the 10mm-towed howitzer to the giant Pershing missile. The working military and civilian population of the post is 16,000 active duty; 37,400 family members; 100 guard and reserve; 5,000 civ. Its 94,200 acres lie adjacent to the city of Lawton in southwestern Oklahoma and 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. FORT STEWART GEORGIA:

The "largest Army post east of the Mississippi." With its 279,000 acres is ideal for large-scale or multi-purpose maneuvers of all kinds. FORT WAINWRIGHT ALASKA:

The Army's northernmost post, Fort Wainwright adjoins the eastern boundary of Fairbanks, Alaska. Construction of the 917,000-acre post began in 1938, renamed after Gen. Jonathan W. Wainwright, hero of Bataan, and today its 4,490 mil, 1,513 civilians; 7,633 family members, population enjoys all the comforts of a modern, fully equipped installation. The climate is moderate in summer, averaging 65 degrees. In winter, below-zero readings are very common. It is the Army's Arctic Mountain Training Center, HQ, 6th Inf Div (Lt.), Combat Aviation Bde, 47th Engineer Bn, and division support command units. Fort Wainwright and Fairbanks, a city of 30,000, are 1,300 air miles from Seattle and 150 miles from the Arctic Circle Fort Wainwright Alaska to gain Cold Region Test Activity and Northern Warfare Training Center from Fort Greely, Alaska, beginning in 2000. Walter Reed Army Medical Center, named for Maj. Walter Reed, conqueror of yellow fever, admitted its first patients to Walter Reed General Hospital in 1899. Today it is sprawling complex at two major locations. A number of medically related facilities surround the hospital, on the ground of the main post in the northern corner of the District of Columbia near the Maryland border. The second location is at Forest Glen, Maryland, just inside the beltway ringing the District. 3,214 civilian, 7,870 family members, 3,932 active duty, and 642 reserve personnel are employed at the combined center. West Point is the home of the United States Army Military Academy. Construction began at this fortress like facility at the command of General George Washington, in 1777, Situated high above the west bank of Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City, West Point has produced some of the nation's most famous Army and Air Force officers from its cadet corps. The reservation covers 16,000 acres and has a population of 5,286 Active duty; 2,851 Family members; 2,817 Civilians; 4,123 Cadets, 2 Reserve. It is located 50 miles north of New York City. U. S. WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE NM:

White Sands Missile Range conducts, supports development and test programs, missile and environmental tests for all branches of the Military and for NASA, other government agencies and private industry. It covers 1.9 million acres in south central New Mexico, near both the Texas and Mexican borders, located in the rural Tularosa Basin of south central New Mexico, with main facilities 26 miles east of Las Cruces, NM, 40 miles north of El Paso, Texas. 439 active duty, 162 reservists; 1,315 family members, 2,841 civ, Personnel test more than 2,000 missiles here each year. The post was established July 9, 1945 and is the birthplace of America's missile and space activity, and the Army's main missile test site, and the Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory.
