CHAPTER 6 PART 1
MY LIFE HISTORY - SCHOOL DAYS
My father is Danial La Vern Wakley who spent most of this life in Downey, Idaho. He was born on the 25th of February 1908 at Pocatello, Idaho. My mother is Mary Edna Evans Wakley and she was born on the 2nd of May 1911 at Malad, Idaho. Since her marriage to my father she has lived in the small town of Downey Idaho. My brother Daniel La Mont Wakley was born in Downey Idaho on 30th May 1931. My brother married LaVona Ray Rushton on 16th of September 1950. I was born on the 11th of May 1938 at Downey and was given the name of Darrel La Mar Wakley. My nickname in school was Pudge. My sister Donna Kay Wakley Stowell was born on the 6th of February 1940 at Malad Idaho. My high school days were the most wonderful days of my life. Some of the items in newspapers about Idaho during the time I was born in 1938 until my senior class (1955-1956) was as follows:
In 1938 the paving of the North-south highway (US) 95 was completed. The Fish and Game Commission was established by initiative. Idaho Senator James P. Pope sponsors Agricultural Adjustment Act. In 1939 State Junior College district law enacted. In 1940 Idaho population: 524,873. Senator William E. Borah dies January 19. Legislation creating a position of Comptroller to be appointed by the Governor, and taking away many powers of the State Auditor, ruled unconstitutional by the Courts. In 1941 Gowen Field completed south of Boise and becomes a military air base. J.R. Simplot food dehydrator begins operations in Caldwell. In 1942 Farragut Navel Training Station established at Lake Pen Oreille. A Pocatello army air base and gun relining plant established. Japanese American placed in interment camps at Hunt. Two anti-liquor initiatives rejected by the voters. Mountain Home Air Base opens. In 1945 State Tax Commission established. Idaho's first phosphate processing plant constructed by the J.R. Simplot Company. In 1946 most recent Idaho Code published. A teacher's retirement system established. Election of Idaho's governor and other state officials for four-year terms begins. Two anti-liquor initiatives and an anti-gambling initiative defeated. In 1947 A state school reorganization plan enacted. University of Idaho Southern Branch at Pocatello becomes Idaho State College. State Board of Corrections established. Idaho State Archives established. In 1948 Bureau of Reclamation begins plans to construct a Hell's Canyon dam in the Snake River for flood control. Idaho Senator Glen Taylor runs for Vice-President on Progressive Party ticket. In 1949 National Reactor Testing Station near Arco established. In Junior High School I had a secret crush LaVona Ray Wakley my sister-in-law and my 2nd cousin Carol Dawn Wakley. Across the miles you've brought me smiles you've wiped my tears by lending an ear, although my voice you
have not heard you've listened carefully to my thoughts, my feelings, my words. And I want you to know, I'm glad we met over the net, 'cause my heart is happy deep down inside and you're a treasure, my friend and that's no lie! Thanks for your friendship! And Thanks for being you! Big Big Hugs. I got a dozen roses from a friend the other day; but I only have 1 left, For I gave them all away. I gave one to my sister, who to me is very dear, In hopes that it will bring to her A little floral cheer. I took one to a friend
who's not feeling very well: The flower or the visit--Which helped more I could not tell. One went to a friend I haven't known for very long, she struggles, so in some small way, I hope this helps her carry on. The rest went to the ones who've helped me in so many ways; they have been a cheerful presence on my dreary days. The Roses were so pretty I just could not keep them all except one single bud standing beautiful and tall. My friend gave me the flowers to help brighten up my day, But the biggest joy I received, was giving them away. In 1950 Idaho population: 5888,637. State Highway Department established with provisions for non-political administration. In 1951 nuclear electric power developed at the National Reactor Testing Station. State teacher's colleges at Lewiston and Albion are closed. Robert La Mont Wakley was bored the 28th October at Hill Field AFB Utah. Private Interviews: Many parents find that regular private interviews with their children help them to draw close to their children, encourage them, and teach them the gospel. Such interviews may be formal or informal. During the interview, the parent should express love for the child. The child should have an opportunity to express his feelings about any subject, problem, or experience. The parent should listen carefully and should take the child's problems and confidences seriously. The parent and child may also want to pray together. In 1952 Anderson Ranch Dam completed. In 1953 television comes to Idaho with KIDO-TV (Now KTVB0 in Boise July 12. C.J. Striker Dam dedicated. Supreme Court rules against Idaho law legalizing slot machines and other lottery devices. Daniel Arthur Wakley was born on the 25th December at Downey Idaho.
Family Councils Parents may want to call family members together in family council meetings. Families can use these meetings to set family goals, resolve family problems, discuss finances, make plans, support and strengthen each other, and pray for each other. A council can be held whenever a need exists. Respect for the opinions and feelings of others are vital to the success of these meetings.
In 1954 Submarine reactor tested and perfected at the National Reactor testing Station. Voters approve initiative to regulate dredge mining. In 1955 State Department of Commerce and Development established. Lewis-Clark Normal opens at Lewiston. Luck Peak Dam dedicated July 6. The Atomic Energy Commission lights Arco with electricity generated by atomic energy. Vanda Kay Wakley was born on the 10th March at Downey Idaho. Family Activities: Parents should plan times when the family can do things together. Picnics, camping trips, family projects, home and yard cleaning, swimming, and wholesome entertainment is a few of the many activities that families can enjoy together.
A family that enjoys activities together will feel greater love and harmony. Children will be more willing to listen to their parents and follow their advice. Parents will be able to teach the gospel more effectively. In 1956 construction of the Palisades Dam completed. Construction in Idaho of the National Interstate Highway System commenced. Constitutional amendment ratified to permit a governor to succeed himself for reelection.

(307-883-2228) My friend is unassuming, Gentle and sincere, Always very patient, lending me an ear. I love my friend and all that's done, Out of love and without pay, In the best of times, And on a cloudy day. My friend will stay and hold me close, And share with me my fears, My friend will listen and not judge me, And help me wipe away my tears. As long as life be in my bones, And while I am able to, I will thank the Lord above, For sending an angel, you. This was the last senior class at Downey High School, in memory of the Downey Bulldogs, in the town of Downey Idaho.
Marsh Valley High School was made up of North Marsh High School, Inkom High School, and the Downey High School. With a united student body the Marsh Valley High School became governed better than ever before. Darrel La Mar Wakley with other from Marsh Valley High School formed a committee that name Eagle as your emblem, and Red, White, and Navy Blue as your school colors. There were other committees for other emblems and colors. The committee I was on endorsed Eagle as your emblem, and Red, White, and Navy blue as your school colors. Then the school voted for their emblem and colors. The school voted for everything but Navy blue and changed the color from Navy blue to Columbia blue. It was will know that students from Downey High School and North Marsh High School did not what Green or Navy Blue because their school had it before. Downey students didn't want Navy Blue and North Marsh students didn't want Green so we change Navy Blue to Columbia Blue and voted on it.
On September 9, 1955, the seniors from three "Valley" schools integrated to form the first Senior Class of Marsh Valley High School.
Although many difficulties had to be straightened out, a cooperative attitude among the Seniors made working together easy and proved to be a determining factor in the success of the class and the new high school.
The first business of the class was to choose representatives to the temporary student council who were: Marilyn Christiansen, Keith Preece, Claire Evans, Earl Blair, Jeroldine Whitworth, and Lona Evans.
A necessary part of the class organization was the election of the first officers as follows: David Colling, President; Delbert Christensen, Vice President; Gerald Peterson, representative; and Lu Ann Layton remained as Secretary. (Later Dave Colling became Student Body President and Delbert Christensen became President with Claire Evans as Vice President.)
The first formal dance of the new Marsh Valley High School, the Senior Ball, was held November 23, 1955. The theme was "Moments to Remember" with LaMont Smith furnishing the music. During the class promenade, the Collegians, a male quartet from I.S.U. sang the theme song.
On April 18, the Senior Class had a roller skating party in Pocatello Idaho.
The seniors previewed college life by visiting I.S.U. on Campus Day, April 20. They toured the campus and viewed a football game, fashion show, and a scene from Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew."
The seniors "Sneak" was to Crystal Springs on May 20. Activities here consisted of swimming, roller-skating, and dancing. A chicken dinner was enjoyed in the Maddox dinning room in Brigham City Utah. The class than attended a movie in Logan.
By May 8, all assignments, lessons, and tests were completed making it easier to attend the remaining activities and to practice for Baccalaureate and Commencement.
The seniors presented a final assembly to the Student Body on May 11, a variety program predicting the future of the class.
One May 13, President Parley a. Arave delivered the Baccalaureate address.
The highlight of the entire year was the Commencement Program on May 16, where the seniors received the long sought-after-diplomas.
Many new friends have been made and new experiences have been gained which made a successful and memorable year for the Class of "56".
Class Motto: "From dreams we carve our destiny".
Class Flower: Talisman Rose
Class Colors: Blue, Gold, and Silver

10th grade.
As I sat there in English class, I stared at the girl next to me. She was my so called "best friend". I stared at her long, silky hair, and wished she were mine. But she didn't notice me like that, and I knew it. After class, she walked up to me and asked me for the notes she had missed the day before and handed them to her. She said "thanks" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I wanted to tell her, I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.
11th grade.
The phone rang. On the other end, it was she. She was in tears, mumbling on and on about how her love had broke her heart. She asked me to come over because she didn't want to be alone, so I did. As I sat next to her on the sofa, I stared at her soft eyes, wishing she were mine. After 2 hours, one Drew Barrymore movie, and three bags of chips, she decided to go to sleep. She looked at me, said "thanks" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.
Senior year.
The day before prom she walked to my locker. "My date is sick" she said; he's not going to go well, I didn't have a date, and in 7th grade, we made a promise that if neither of us had dates, we would go together just as "best friends". So we did. Prom night, after everything was over, I was standing at her front door step! I stared at her as she smiled at me and stared at me with her crystal eyes. I want her to be mine, but she isn't think of me like that, and I know it. Then she said "I had the best time, thanks!" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.
Graduation Day.
A day passed, then a week, then a month. Before I could blink, it was graduation day. I watched as her perfect body floated like an angel up on stage to get her diploma. I wanted her to be mine, but she didn't notice me like that, and I knew it. Before everyone went home, she came to me in her smock and hat, and cried as I hugged her. Then she lifted her head from my shoulder and said, "you're my best friend, thanks" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.
A Few Years Later.
Now I sit in the pews of the church. That girl is getting married now. I watched her say "I do" and drive off to her new life, married to another man. I wanted her to be mine, but she didn't see me like that, and I knew it. But before she drove away, she came to me and said "you came!". She said "thanks" and kissed me on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.
Funeral about 48 years later.
Years passed, I looked down at the coffin of a girl who used to be my "best friend". At the service, they read a diary entry she had wrote in her high school years. This is what it read: I stare at him wishing he was mine, but he doesn't notice me like that, and I know it. I want to tell him, I want him to know that I don't want to be just friends, I love him but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why. I wish he would tell me he loved me!
I wish I did too... I thought to my self, and I cried.
i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u i love u
For all the people that you love! Even if you don't love someone give it to them....just to let them know that your thinking about them!!
Don't wait cause it might be too late tell the people you love that you love them or you will regret it the
rest of your life!! ..
