In order to provide titles that are both easy to read and
descriptive, the URL text found is this site has been written
by me. Thus it may or may not actually match the title of the
site as shown at the top of the browser window.
Link to Where?
Where at all practical I've tried to link the home page for
a site as this URL is the least likely to change of all the individual
page URLs. However, internet sites change frequently and as the
sites are updated individual page names often change. If you
have a "Document not found" error after using a link,
try paring back the URL until the link works, then work forward
from there. Then e-mail
me and tell me which link isn't working so I can update my
site.
Mine! Mine! All Mine!
I developed this web site with my perceived personal needs
at the forefront. Therefore, you might find the selection of
included sites ecletic; while I've tried to keep an open mind
it's not the easiest thing to do. Thus, for example, you may
find that my view of "international" is sometimes a
bit small. I have included a links site for most topics so you
can easily branch out from my selections.
Best of the Best
Where appropriate, the description for each category (on
the category's page) contains a listing of my favorite sites
within the category. The "Best of the Best" page is
a listing of my favorite overall sites--those sites that I visit
on a regular basis. Thus "Best of the Best" isn't a
comprehensive list compiled from all the other categories but
rather is a category of its own.
Delayed Stock Quotes $0.10 per 12...
Stock quotes can be had almost anywhere and so I haven't
indicated each site that has free delayed quotes. I have made
note of sites with free real-time quotes or special charting.
Maps without Folding!
Many Web sites (including this one!) now have site maps.
Given link bars and home pages, the site maps seemed superfluous
until I actually tried one--they really are great! Site maps
are an easy way to readily determine site content, and, when
structured correctly, you can use your browser's Find command
to search them. Don't be afraid--there's no folding when you're
done!
Commentary on Commentary
My comments for each site indicate what I found to be of
use or interest at that particular site. They by no means necessarily
include all the features of a site. However, if you're looking
for a particular type of data or information try the search
engine--if I've listed it in my commentary you'll find it
regardelss of the category I've placed the site in.
After All, Time IS Money
I have a single phone line in a rural area and a dial-up
ISP connection and thus my on-line time, while not burdened by
a per-minute charge, is valuable. All other things being equal,
my favored sites will always be those that load quickly. Thus
where I noticed how quickly or slowly a site loaded I've included
a note in the site's commentary.
I Spell "Potato", Dan Quayle Spells "Potatoe"
Your favorite sites may well be different than mine. Please
let me know what you think.
Pay to Play?
I have not subscribed to any sites at this point other than
the Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition as subscribing to
a site just to evaluate the content is a tremendous waste of
money. Thus keep in mind that for fee-based sites my commentary
is based solely on what the site advertising says about itself.
I'd highly recommend thinking long and hard before subscribing
to a fee-based site as most information will appear someplace
else for free. The exception is specialty or proprietary information:
Wall Street Journal articles won't appear anyplace else but in
the Wall Street Journal, Morningstar isn't going to give away
all of their mutual fund research, etc...
