Government,
National and International
On U.S. federal government
sites...
U.S. federal government sites have improved tremendously over
the past 3 years. They've gone from having precious little information
to being well-organized, fairly complete resources that are,
by and large, quick to load and easy to use. Many of the government
agency sites are excellent primary sources for raw data and analysis;
if you want the data without the corny commentary, get it from
the government!
Keep in mind that all government sites have press releases
just as all Federal Reserve sites
have access to regional information, the Beige Book, and history
and information about the Federal Reserve System as a whole and
their district in particular.
If you know what you're looking for but don't know which U.S.
federal government site is going to have the data (or information),
try GOVBOT.
On Federal Reserve sites...
Each of the 12 Federal Reserve district banks is listed separately
as each district's web site has an unique spin. Some are heavy
on data, some on economic information, some on analysis, some
on education, etc... Don't be led into the assumption that just
because all of the district banks represent similar parts of
the same system they all are the same!
A cool new "trend" in Federal Reserve district bank
sites is links (e-mail and WWW) to their individual economists
as well as links to the economists' abstracts and papers.
On Canadian federal government
sites...
The Canadian federal government as a whole does not seem to
currently place much emphasis on information dissemination through
the Web. While every arm of the Canadian federal government maintains
a separate Web site, the sites are fairly obviously done to satisfy
a requirement rather than to promote the interests of the departments.
Regardless, there are some "gems".
