Insurance

Insurance information on the Web can be divided into 3 categories: information provided by insurance companies, information provided by regulatory and member agencies, and information provided to insurance consumers by third parties.

Educational information, from the basic to the fairly technical is fairly easy to come by, as are calculators. The best educational information seems to come from third parties (Insurance Information Instute, Consumer Insurance Guide), while the best selection of calculators seems to come from the insurance companies.

Quotes aren't hard to come by (even if you don't have Internet access) and thus I haven't made an effort to come up with sites specifically for obtaining quotes.

Insurance Companies

Allstate Insurance Company

Basic educational information, FAQs, calculators tools.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield

Limited amount of educational information and news. Plan features section.

The Chubb Corporation

Sales and information (company news, annual reports, etc...). Good "library" of educational information (not very technical). Information on a variety of personal and business insurance positions.

CNA

Products and services information. Press releases. Links to CNA Life and CNA Canada.

MetLife Online®

Articles and information on a variety of insurance related topics. Not an in-depth learning tool but a decent source for advice on common occurrences and issues. Several calculators and related tools available with free registration.

Nationwide

Mainly a sales tool.

Northwestern Mutual Life®

Insurance glossary, news and information, FAQs, calculators (for personal, small business, and retirement).

SAFECO

Mainly a sales tool.

 

Regulatory and Member Agencies

HCFA

Health Care Financing Administration, the federal agency that administers Medicare, Medicaid, and Child Health Insurance programs. News and information on their programs. Includes state information. Good FAQ section.

NAIC

National Association of Insurance Commissioners (an organization of insurance regulators). Locate an insurance regulator in your area. Calendar of public education programs. Newsletters and press releases.

NAMIC

National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. Insurance news and information. Information on federal and state issues. Lots of links.

 

Canadian Insurance Sites

Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association Inc.

Publications--consumer assistance, life insurance, health insurance, financial planning, retirement planning, etc... National and provincial facts and figures.

Insurance Canada

Consumer information, directory of providers, links, Canadian Insurance Magazine, news and events.

Insurance Council of Canada

Seems like it should be important but all of the image links were broken when I tried to visit and so I couldn't evaluate the site.

From Insurance News Network, LLC. News and information on a variety of insurance types. Educational information (The basics), feature stories, FAQ, glossary of insurance terms. Searchable. State auto and health insurance mandates. Several "tools"--company ratings, company guide, auto premiums by model, etc...

Insurance Information Institute

Educational information for insurance consumers. Home, business, auto, and other insurance types with several topics covered for each insurance type. News media section (information intended for use by the media). Links. Slow as all get out the first time I was there; the server was down the next time I tried.
