Overall, the offerings in this category seem disappointing. The best print tax resource that I have come across has an awful web site. A fully searchable full-text version of the U.S. Tax Code isn't much help to Joan Taxpayer who wants to learn about Hope Scholarships and Lifelong Learning Credits. Additionally, Joan Taxpayer likely doesn't need or want assistance from a high-power tax service (who doesn't want to give away information for free).

There are some gems: The IRS web site is great if you have a specific question in mind. The documentation is searchable, downloadable in .pdf format, and written for the average taxpayer. And it's straight from the proverbial horse's mouth! TaxWeb is also a great place to go with a question. To keep current on tax news (national and international) try TaxCast or TaxWire...or be old-fashoined and subscribe to CCH's paper publications.

CCH Incorporated

Cumbersome to load and navigate and thus difficult to evaluate--their paper publications are much better thought out. Links to several different CCH business areas. Of note in the tax section: customized tax due date calendars and an extensive IRS address book.

DT Online: Financial Planning

From Deloitte & Touche. Weekly tax news, financial tips and advice, small business information, personal finance information, tax and business references. Searchable.

Ernst & Young LLP - Tax Services

Tax Cast tax news, information, links, educational information (limited to what is sandwiched in between advertisements), tax articles, 1040 Survival Kit.

Fairmark Press Tax Guide for Investors

Tax guides: beginning, Roth IRAs, capital gains, mutual funds, spousal liability, custodial accounts, and more.

Internal Revenue Service

Tax statistics, news and information for individuals and businesses, tax regulations (in plain English as well), forms and publications. Searchable, which is, in my experience, the best way to find specific pieces of information.

From Warren, Gorham, & Lamont. Categorized tax news, links, feature articles from a variety of tax journals.

Roth IRA Web Site

State Individual Income Tax Rates

Tax rates by state for 1999. Low/high, number of brackets, low/high bracket, personal exemptions.
