Chakras

Here are my own thoughts about the Chakras and how it relates to the religious practice of a faithful, temple-attending member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. These are just my brainstorming thoughts - not any church doctrine.

Chakra One: Root Chakra

Earth, Physical identity, oriented to self-preservation Located at the base of the spine, this chakra forms our foundation. It represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.

Here is a meditation for the Root Chakra that I use in my yoga class.

Anything that strengthens our connection to the physical earth. Being born into this physical life, obtaining a physical, mortal body.
Removing your shoes on sacred ground
Kneeling for prayer
Symbolized by earth.
We are stewards of the earth.
Adam was commanded to til and work the earth It was cursed for his sake.
Telestial kingdom?

Feb 2004. I am reading Carolyn Myss' book called The Anatomy of The Spirit. It gives more insight into the chakras and how they correspond with the Christian sacraments. I am not very familiar with these Catholic ordinances, but as I read, I will see if her ideas correspond with ordinances that I believe are the true principles and ordinances given by God to be part of His Kingdom.

The first chakra (All is One) is related to the tribal power, belonging to a family, and a group. She sees this as representing a Catholic baptism of a baby. I still think it does relate to baptism, and other things as well

Baptism is the door that gets you into the group, the kingdom of God. Well, I guess it has to be Confirmation as well. These are your membership cards. They set you apart from all other groups in the world. You share the same beliefs, ordinances, prophet, hymns, and anywhere you go in the world you can feel at home and part of the family because they all have the very same worship and Relief Society and Primary and all those organizations. You can sing a hymn and any language can join in. It is turning people of all nations who would hear God's voice into a single fold. That is real tribal power. Feeling unity and support is the thing that keeps people alive.

If you are born into the church then your learn those moral lessons that bless you with a wonderful life: honor, loyalty, honesty, justice. This is assuming that your family does not have other more dominant ills. But children have a grace period where they are not bound by the same eternal consequences of the tribe until their brain and conscience are in place and it is the responsibility of parents to pass along the tribal morals and help develop the child's conscience.

All those auxilaries like Primary and YM/YW and Relief Society give a sense of belonging to all members and strengthen them wherever they are around the world. All the things the church does to keep families together and strengthened would be related to this chakra.

So all those things in the LDS faith would be related to that first chakra: Baptism, Confirmation, families, Auxilary organizations.

Chakra Two:

Water, Emotional identity, oriented to self-gratification The second chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change.

The Meditation I used in my class.
Multiply and replenish the earth
Marrying and having children strengthens and keeps this chakra clear
Chastity before marriage
total fidelity to spouse after marriage
using self-discipline as a method of birth control rather than an unnatural method
If this chakra represents water, then this would be the chakra for baptism. Baptism represents dying, being buried, then being reborn in water. If the birth of a baby from water is the fruit of the sexual union between a mother and father, and if baptism is a rebirth, what is the union from which baptism is the fruit?

The discussion of the second chakra (Honor One Another) from Carolyn Myss' book tells of how this chakra deals with creative ideas becoming reality, or giving birth to ideas, sexuality, money, status, choice, and personal ethics. I don't have room to go into all the detail, but after reading it, and pondering what might relate in the LDS culture I would say the sealing or eternal marriage applies and tithing and the law of consecration.

This chakra is relationship oriented. As I discuss all of these chakras I am assuming the indivdual and family is the temple-attending, prophet-obeying kind with no notible personal problems or disfunctions. Having the commandment from God for sexual purity before marriage develops self-discipline and channels that tremendous sexual/creative energy into education, missions and developing talents. The eternal marriage then places God's seal of approval for the sexual relationship - with the absolute expectation of total marital fidelity. This eliminates all sorts of problems right there dealing with the sexual powers being corrupted and energy being destroyed. Wickedness never was happiness - or powerful, in the true sense of the word.

Sealing binds us to our spouse, our children, our parents and to God's family for eternity. What else more could you want for a relationship? Maybe to have eternal creative powers? I think that fits here too. So the God's life, or Eternal Life with your eternal companion is the expression of the second chakra for eternity, creating living things, manipulating matter, making things from your ideas. Gaining this Eternal life demands that you have become master of all second chakra issues.

I see tithing and the Law of Consecration fitting into this chakra as well. We must learn that we don't own anything, nor do we have control over the wealth of the universe. It is God's. This is the only healthy attitude to have about money and wealth. Any other kind brings illness and spiritual weakness and is energy-draining. The Law of Consecration is just a more difficult extention of tithing. It really can only be practiced by a community or family who are totally unselfish, totally honest and ethical. But it ensures that all are wealthy and all rise together and all get everything they need and most of the things they want. This is the safe place to have fine chothing and richly appointed houses and jewelry and artwork and a jaccuzi and tennis courts and gold and silver because everyone who wants the riches and fine stuff will have it - not just a limited few.

Carolyn Myss believes that the sacrament of communion goes along with this chakra, but for us communion would be the partaking of the sacrament each week in church. I don't see how this one fits. I will ponder more.

Chakra Three: Solar Plexus

Fire, Ego identity, oriented to self-definition This chakra is known as the power chakra, located in the solar plexus. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.

This chakra is strengthened every time we choose in agreement with what we know is right and weakens and splits and fragments our power when we knowingly choose wrong. Our free will. Moral agency and its consequences.

Whenever we blame other people or God for our problems or illnesses or life experiences, we give away our power to change the circumstances. we weaken this solar plexus. When we take responsibility for all our feelings, thoughts, actions, trials, illnesses, then we retain all the power to work thru them.

The Meditation I used in my class.

There's not much I would change about my view of the solar plexus chakra after reading Carolyn Myss' book. This third chakra (Honor Oneself) is self-esteem and personal power and every time we choose close to what is Universally true - our spirit is stronger, our freedom is increased

What really came clear to me is the importance of a proper nurturing parent (especially Mother) relationship in those years before age 8. This is the time when self-worth and personal power thru choosing the right is taught and its very hard to recover if it doesn't happen during those years.
