Springtime Meditation

I will use this meditation for a beginning class in the springtime at the beginning of class. We will then focus on learning some twists.

Sit comfortably.
Wiggle and settle into the chair or floor.
Inhale and sit a little taller
Exhale and release shoulders
Inhale and sit a little taller.
Exhale long and slowly
Close your eyes.

Keep your spine long, but comfortable during this meditation
Keep your breath long and smooth.

It won’t take much effort to imagine a hillside buried in snow. But its not beautiful white fluffy snow, its crusty gray snow that has been settling and becoming more dingy and dirty as the long winter is coming to a close. There are patches of brown here and there where the snow has melted and the dead leaves of fall have been smashed under the weight of the snow.

On this day, the sun is bright in the clear blue sky. There are sounds of birds but no buzzing of insects yet. The only other sound is a dripping water as more snow melts and begins to collect together and then making its way down the hill in little rivulets. The old dirty snow melts to make the new runoff that feeds the streams and rivers.

New green shoots begin to poke up thru the dead mashed leaves. The plants and trees are waking up again.

The old things feed the new. But the new must then leave the old behind and grow and continue moving up and away.

As each day goes by in spring, the new leaves come ever so slowly, almost imperceptively until one day, the whole world is green and new. Rain keeps everything green and clean. The melting snow raises the rivers and they become fast flowing. The water pushes and rushes everything old and dead and stale downstream.

After awhile, the dead decaying leaves and layers can no longer be seen, they have been totally replaced with the new green.

This springtime, ask your unconscious mind to bring to your awareness something that is old and dead in your life. Maybe it is a habit, or an excuse for holding back, an attitude or grudge. When you have discovered what this old thing is, visualize that as the dead brown leaves crushed under the snow. There is new live coming up underneath. Those new shoots are a desire growing and building within you to leave that dead thing and move on to something better. See yourself struggling to leave the old behind. Visualize how you can forgive, change, move ahead, breathe new life into your attitudes. Use the inspiration of springtime and sunshine and new life springing from the dead to also move out the old from your life.

Stay with whatever thoughts your meditation has led for another few minutes, and I will be silent. Then I will come back to help you come out of relaxation pose.
