Religion and Yoga

Yoga has its roots in the Hindu religion and practiced in its purest form, I don't think it can be separated. However, when yoga was introduced into the west, the practice took on characteristics of our western culture and we have looked at yoga mostly for its health and mental benefits. Now it is becoming a chic fitness trend and big business which is really moving it away from its humble religious beginnings. In some ways this is very sad because the most satisfying benefit of yoga is that peaceful, quiet mind and humble lifestyle which is so opposite to the rich Hollywood lifestyle.

For me, my emotional/spiritual health is directly tied to my physical health and yoga supports both beautifully.

My own religious faith is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For me it is a living faith that helps me remember where I came from, why I'm here and where I'm headed when I'm finished here. Yoga supports that remembering process.

I don't actively seek or avoid bringing spiritual faith into my teaching or practice, but I want to encourage the students to deepen their own personal faith, not necessarily adopt mine. I have my own opionions on how my yoga practice supports my LDS religious faith and the other way around too.
