Operations/Paperwork

| The White Pass & Olympic is operated using car cards and waybills. As I stated on a previous page, I'm part of the regular ops crew for Lee Nicholas' Utah Colorado Western (UCW) and have also operated on Rob Spangler's WP 8th Sub, Ted York's Cajon Pass and Wayne Roderick's Teton Short Line. Three out of the four layouts mentioned use car cards. The fourth uses computer generated switchlists. I like car cards for a home layout because: they are interactive, the system is self-healing, they are simple to use. I do believe that switchlists also have their place, but not on my layout. In addition to car cards and waybills, other paperwork is required to insure that everyone is well-informed of their duties and of the layout they are operating on. |

 Train Instructions
| Microsoft Excel has been used to create train instructions. A fixed size sheet with the railroad's logo, train number and name if applicable, along with a short description of the work to perform have been added. No picture to show yet. | |
| A switchlist, if wanted by the engineer/conductor has also been created in Microsoft Excel using a set of instructions I found on the Yahoo OpsIndSig group I believe. The document is titled "Generating Operating Forms". No picture to show yet. |
