TINY ACRES

HOW OUR PLACE GOT ITS NAME

The name Tiny Acres originated when Dad and Mom, Fred and Arlene Merrell, wanted a name for the farm where they raised Arabian horses. They had eight acres . It was considered an  acreage but it was a small acreage. After considering several names Tiny Acres seemed perfect for their place. As they grew older the Arabians began to be a challenge to care for. One day while visiting in Logan, Utah, Dad and Mom became acquainted with a couple who was raising miniatures. They  fell in love with them and bought their first mini's, a stallion and a mare, from this couple. They were among the first to raise miniatures in eastern Idaho. With careful selection and breeding they increased their herd to 16 horses. Every year they showed them at Eastern Idaho State Fair. They encouraged other people to become interested in miniature horses.

Mom passed away in 1993. Dad wanted to pursue other interests. He asked us, Karen Drake and Kathy Merrell, if we would like to continue with the minis and the name Tiny Acres in honor of our mother. We chose five of the horses to begin our own line of miniatures. We are grateful to our parents for teaching us to enjoy, caring for, and training horses. We think the name Tiny Acres is fitting for a farm that raises horses that are under 34".

We keep an average of 15 miniature horses and have show quality foals for sale each year.   In the limited shows that we have attended, we have placed well. I have been the top amateur in the last three show that we were able to do in 2004.. We hope to be able to show a lot more in 2007. We will be showing 3 gelding in driving (country pleasure and roadster), obstacle (halter and driving) and also halter. Our place is located between Blackfoot and Firth on Highway 91 going toward Idaho Falls.  We are breeding different colored horses such as palomino, buckskins, bays, silver dappled and gray pintos, that have Arabian characteristics.  In the limited shows that we have attended, we have placed well. All of our horses have national champions in their pedigrees. We are breeding to have concentrations of Boones Little Buckaroo and Gold Melody Boy blood lines in our foals.

PHILOSOPHY OF TINY ACRES RANCH

We believe that horses need plenty of open fresh air with a 3-sided shelter in a good fenced pasture with some friends to play with.  Our limited space makes it necessary to raise quality horses. Our horses are very easy to handle because we imprint them at birth. Then each day we work with them in some small way so when it comes time to train them , they are very willing and easy to teach. We are breeding toward horses that are fine boned, with a dish face, and plenty of color.  We are also breeding for versatility. Horses that can jump, drive, and have the temperament to be able to compete in obstacle classes, both in hand and driving. We are breeding horses to have the temperament and personality so that you can do anything with them including costume class and children classes.  We want a horse that has more than a pretty face and body.
