My Gerbils and Rats

All of the pups born and raised here at SoLo Acres Futuro will have human contact, so they can build a strong

bond with humans.

My average pricing for pups is around $5 each, for both Rats and Gerbils, and for adults $2.50 for gerbils and $7.00 for rats.

Colors in my litters range from Black, Black and white, fox,

fox and white, grey, and grey and white. I sometimes get other more uncommon colors.

Ash, my first gerbil, must be getting close. She and Coal are building a nest in the corner of their pen. Ash used to destroy the nest every time Coal finished building it, but now she is helping to make it. (the picky girl)

My first litter of 8 pups were born on November 7, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. Just a couple hours before

birth, I took these pictures. Just look how big her old belly is! ;)

This is Ashes first litter and mine as well. What a surprise I got when I saw

8 Pups! I did research and expected only 4-6 for her first time. ;)

Day One

Proud first time mom is glad to show off her hour old pups.

Day Two

Happy first time dad is watching the pups while mommy is grabbing a bite to eat.

Day Nine

The whole group with fuzz.

These eight tiny pups are very stressful on the parents.

Mom is covered in her pups as they drain her.

Papa is trying to hide in the other corner as they try to nurse off of him.

General Gerbil Information

Need- Gerbils enjoy an exercise wheel (with no holes that they may get their foot caught in), a wooden

box to hide in, water bottle, food dish, gerbil food, large cage, and toilet paper roles. I give them many toilet

paper roles that they rip up (in one night) and turn into bedding and a little pine shavings in the bottom

(that they rip up in one night as well).

Handling- You would not believe how active a young one week old pup can be. When you

hold your pup be sure your hand is cupped around it and over a pillow. Sadly from a bad experience

grabbing the tail is the worse thing to do. The tail will rip off and cause the chance of your gerbil to bleed to

death. Wash your hands before and after handling your fuzzy pet.

Feed- If you purchase a pup and notice it is not eating well then you can offer it softer foods such as bread

soaked in condensed milk, cheerios, raw oatmeal, the smaller millet seed. Sunflowers are a favorite

but are very fattening

Important!

Luckily gerbils rarely get sick, but here are the most common sicknesses.

1) If you purchase a pup and notice that it is making a clicking type noise, heavy/un normal breathing,

puffed fur, glazed eyes, scrawny tails, and/or loss of weight, then it probably has a respiratory

infection.

2) Diarrhea is usually the sign of something serious, normally infected by Tyler's disease or

E. coli. Both are often fatal, but hydrate and antibodies may save the gerbil. Your other

gerbils may be at risk.

Contact your vet if your gerbil shows any of these signs A.S.A.P.
